ALTER TRADE - PHILIPPINES
About Alter Trade
Alter Trade is located in the Philippines and works to improve conditions on the island of Negros, where small-scale farming takes place. As a result of historic and cultural influences, a handful of rich landowners own the majority of the land and have a monopoly over production and the trade of sugar. The work available on sugar estates is the only form of employment for many of the landless and near landless inhabitants of Negros.
Created in 1987 to counter these unfair trade practices, the Alter Trade co-operative aims to redistribute the profits from sugar production to small producers. Through Alter Trade the sugar cane producers receive training to improve their skills, are able to increase the quality and value of their products, have access to credit and receive training for undertaking their own enterprises.
Alter Trade's sugar is used in Trade Aid's organic chocolate.
